Williams Collects Second MVC Defensive Player of the Week Honor
Oct. 2, 2012
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Missouri State women's soccer defender Nia Williams garnered her second Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week award this season, the league office announced on Tuesday. A senior from Roeland Park, Kan., Williams previously won the award on August 21 of this year and on September 7, 2010.
"Nia (Williams) is a very strong leader of our defense," said head coach Rob Brewer. "As a middle defender, her determination and communication are critical to our success, particularly at home. She shows up to battle and works hard every day for us."
Williams continued her defensive dominance, leading the Bears' backline to its fifth consecutive home shutout on Sunday, extending the MSU Home shutout streak to more than 497 minutes. She played all 200 minutes last week, helping to shut down then-league-leading Evansville for the Bears' sixth shutout of the season, the most by any league program. Williams was vital as the last line of defense in front of MSU goalkeeper Chelsea Voet stopping numerous Evansville attempts at offensive runs. She aided MSU in allowing just seven shots in 110 minutes against Evansville and six shots against UMKC on Monday.
Missouri State will set out on the road with a Valley match at Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Bears and Panthers will kickoff at 2:00 p.m. in Cedar Fall, Iowa. MSU returns home for a conference showdown with Creighton on Sunday, Oct. 14. Kick off against the Bluejays is set for 1:00 p.m. and the Bears will attempt to set a new attendance record at the match.
