Smith, Sommer, Teahan Take Valley Honors for Women's Soccer
Sept. 27, 2011
The Missouri State women's soccer team (7-3-1, 1-0-0) racked up three more Missouri Valley Conference weekly honors, the league announced today. Senior Jessica Teahan received the inaugural Goalkeeper of the Week award, junior Michelle Sommer was named Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Bethany Smith took home Newcomer of the Week honors.
Teahan had strong weekend of performances, registering another pairs of shutouts. On Friday, she turned aside six Sycamore shots and shutout Indiana State for the second straight season. She continued her dominance in net with a four-save shutout of Saint Louis on Sunday. In three career matches against the Billikens, she has not allowed a goal. Teahan's four shutouts this season is the most by any MVC keeper.
Sommer has become one of the Bears' main offensive threats this season. On Friday, she scored the game-winning goal in the conference opener at Indiana State. Her header off of a corner kick just before halftime was the decisive goal. She followed that up with a game-winning assist on Bethany Smith's goal as MSU beat Saint Louis, 1-0. Sommer leads the team in shots with 42 and shots on goal with 16.
Smith scored the game-winning goal on a great run in the 63rd minute of Missouri State's 1-0 win over Saint Louis on Sunday. Her goal ended the Bears' 600-minute scoring drought against Saint Louis and propelled MSU to its first victory over SLU since 2005. The goal was her team-leading third of the season. She also leads the team in game-winning goals (2), points (8), is second on the squad in shots on goal (11) and has started all 11 matches as a freshman.
The Bears will host Illinois State on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m. The Bears defeated the Redbirds on penalty Kicks in last season's MVC Tournament semifinals. Missouri State will wrap up the three-game home stand against Drake on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
