Shelby Stewart Nets Game-Winner in Final Minutes of Home Win over UMKC
The Missouri State women's soccer team got an 89th minute goal off the foot of senior Shelby Stewart for a thrilling 1-0 home victory against UMKC at Plaster Field on Tuesday evening.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - After a pair of home exhibition shutouts, the Missouri State women's soccer team will hit the road to open the regular season in Kansas City against the UMKC Kangaroos on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Bears will play the Utah State Aggies in the home opener and first-ever regular season match at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

"We are happy to be successful thus far through the exhibitions," said head coach Rob Brewer, "but we would like to see how the team would react to some adversity. We will continue to get better each day, but the level of play and intensity goes up, tackles get harder and we have to be ready for that."

Juniors Molly Brewer and Kristina Tomaras tallied two goals each in the exhibition slate. Brewer tied for the team lead in goals last season. Freshman Rachel Catrell also scored a goal and added an assist during her two exhibition matches.

Senior Molly Huber led the Bears in assists a year ago. She had an assist in the Bears' exhibition win over Drury on Monday.

In goal, juniors Jessica Perry and Laura Ketzer split time in the two shutouts in exhibition play. Perry saw a majority of time in net last season, recording five wins and four shutouts.

Missouri State is 5-0-0 all-time against UMKC. All five victories have been by a single goal with the last four matches being decided in the final minutes or overtime. Sunday's fixture against Utah State will be the first between the two programs.

"It is about us," continued Brewer on facing Utah State for the first time. "We are still refining our style of play and our focus is on Missouri State women's soccer, not Utah State. We are excited for the opportunity to play in front of our fans in the middle of campus at our new field."

Sunday will be a big day on campus, initiated by the women's soccer regular season home opener at 11:00 a.m. The team will sign posters for fans after the match. The athletics department will hold an open house for the new facilities from 3:00 to 5:30 followed by the Allison South Stadium dedication at 6:00 p.m.
