Missouri State Women's Soccer Picked Fifth in MVC Preseason Poll
The Missouri Valley Conference released the 2006 preseason soccer poll Tuesday, and for the second year in a row, the Missouri State women's soccer team was picked to finish fifth.
The Bears finished third in the Valley in 2005 after being tabbed fifth in the preseason poll. The third-place finish matched the Bears' best finish in school history. Under head coach Rob Brewer, the MSU women's soccer team concluded the 2005 season with a 9-4-5 overall record and a 3-1-2 league mark.
For the second straight year, Creighton was selected to win the 2006 Valley title, garnering six of seven possible first-place votes and tallying 48 points. Drake finished in a close second with 41 points and one first-place vote. Evansville and Illinois State tied for third place with 29 points, with Missouri State was tabbed fifth with 24 points. Indiana State and UNI rounded out the poll with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Missouri State women's soccer team returns some conference standouts from last season. Senior Kate Hercules was awarded the 2005 Valley Defensive Player of the Year and named to the All-MVC First Team along with sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Jasper. Senior Chelsea Anderson was a second-team all-league pick and sophomore Allison Osmundson was an honorable mention selection.
The Bears will play their first match of the 2006 season in an exhibition game against the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Saturday, Aug. 19, at 6 p.m. at Plaster Field.
