Women's Soccer to Christen New Stadium with Saturday Exhibition
Aug. 14, 2014
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The 2014 Missouri State women's soccer season gets underway on Saturday (August 16) when the Bears host former MVC rival Creighton in a 7:00 p.m. exhibition match, the first event ever to be held at the new Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. The Bears and Bluejays last met in 2012, Creighton's final season in the MVC, with MSU winning by a 1-0 score.
"We have had a good week of training," said head coach Rob Brewer. "It will be a nice change of pace to play against somebody else. It will also be good to see how we have adjusted to the new surface as it plays more like grass than the surface at Plaster Field. We will still have to determine our style of play on this surface. We are excited to start a new chapter in the history of Missouri State women's soccer."
Missouri State returns nine starters from last season when the Bears finished fourth in the league at 2-2-2. Molly Huber, who led the team with six assists, is one of five seniors on this year's squad. Molly Brewer tied for the team-lead with four goals in 2013 and is one of 10 juniors on the team.
Senior Kelsey Fouch earned the league's top defensive honor a year ago as the MVC Defensive Player of the Year, the eighth time the honor was bestowed upon an MSU player. She will spearhead a traditionally stout backline for MSU.
Following Saturday's opener, the Bears will host crosstown foe Drury at 8:00 p.m. on Monday (August 18) in the exhibition finale.
The Bears open the regular season at UMKC on August 22. MSU will face Utah State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday August 24 in the first regular season match at the new stadium.
