Huber, Weimer Notch Preseason Honors; Bears Picked Fifth
Aug 14, 2013
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri State women's soccer team was tabbed to finish fifth this season according to the Missouri Valley Conference preseason coaches poll announced Wednesday. Illinois State was selected first followed by Drake, Evansville and Indiana State, just ahead of the Bears. UNI and league-newcomer, Loyola rounded out the poll.
"I think it is a reflection of the quality of athletes we graduated last season," stated head coach Rob Brewer on the preseason slot. "That group did a lot for this team, but now it is time for some new faces to step up. I don't think people really know much about this year's team."
Senior forward Rachel Weimer and junior transfer Molly Huber were named to the MVC Preseason all-conference team as part of the release. The pair of offensive threats looks to balance a perennially stout Missouri State defense.
Weimer was an All-MVC second teamer in 2012 after leading the Bears with six goals scored. Three of her goals were game-winners. She added a pair of assists for a team-best 14 points a year ago.
Huber transferred to Missouri State after two seasons at the University of Kentucky. The St. Louis native collaborated with fellow Bear Kelsey Fouch to capture the USASA U23 National Championship with club team St. Louis Scott Gallagher this summer.
The Bears return 15 letterwinners including seven starters from last season's 8-8-2 squad that ended up 2-3-1 in Valley matches. Missouri State had six-straight home shutouts going into the regular season finale against Indiana State.
