Soccer's Nia Williams and Bethany Smith Accomplish Athletic Feats This Summer
Two Missouri State women's soccer players accomplished impressive athletic feats this past weekend. Junior Nia Williams finished tops in her age group at the Midwest Mayhem Triathlon, while her cousin Bethany Smith, an incoming freshman, won the national championship with her club soccer team KCFC Intensity.
Smith tallied a second-half goal in KCFC's championship winning match. The squad scored six goals in the title match win over Bethesda SC at Aurora, Colo. Her team entered the championship tournament ranked seventh, winning the three matches in Colorado by a combined score of 15-4. Smith scored five goals in the regionals, tied for the most in that round. At one point in the season, Smith's KCFC team was ranked No. 3 in the country.
"This was a great accomplishment for our team which had a lot of ups and downs this season," said Smith. "It was a great way to finish the year. This whole experience has made me a better player and will lead me in to my collegiate career with confidence."
Meanwhile, Nia Williams had a very nice showing at the 2011 Midwest Mayhem Triathlon held in Lawrence, Kan. Williams finished the triathlon in one hour, 22 minutes and 29 seconds, which placed her 56th overall. But her time was good enough to win her age group by nearly three minutes over the nearest competitor. She was 12th overall among females and crossed the finish line with her mother, Nina Murray. Williams said her mother was the inspiration behind competing in the triathlon.
"My mom competed at the world triathlon when I was young," stated Williams. "It was a great experience and very cool to cross the finish line with my mom. It was a great accomplishment and was always something I had on my bucket list. This triathlon will help my endurance this season. It showed me that I can overcome obstacles and persevere to achieve a goal that I set out to do."
The women's soccer team kicks off the regular season on Friday, August 19 at UALR. The team's home opener is Friday, September 2 with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Kansas at Plaster Field.
