The Missouri State women's soccer team (11-3-2, 4-0-1) got two second half goals to beat visiting UNI (8-8-2, 2-3-0) on senior night on Saturday, 2-0, at Plaster Field. The win continues the Bears' team-record 11-match unbeaten streak.

"It has been a lot of hard work," said head coach Rob Brewer. "Our defense has played really well this season. We have won some games late and it always helps to have a fifth-year senior in Teahan back there in net."

Freshman Bethany Smith scored her team-leading eight goal of the year to put the Bears' up 1-0 in the 53rd minute. Senior Christine Cross picked up a loose ball along the left sideline. She sent it forward where Smith spun past her defender. Smith then sent a low shot to the far post that got past the UNI keeper. It is the fifth time in the last six matches that Smith has scored a goal. Her eight goals are the most since Caroline Sweeney scored nine in 2006.

Junior Michelle Sommer nearly added to the lead in the 59th minute. She sent a header over the keeper's head. Her shot hit the underside on the crossbar and dropped straight down to the end line and was ruled a no-goal.

But sophomore Shelby Stewart would give the Bears a cushion with her fourth goal of the season in the 86th minute. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Teahan sent a long goal kick into the UNI defensive zone. A misplay allowed the ball to bound over the defender's head where Stewart ran onto it. Stewart took the ball in one-on-one and sent a chip past the Panther keeper.

Teahan was credited with her first assist of the season She also made six saves in her final game at Plaster Field to solidify her seventh shutout of the season. She leads all Valley keepers with the seven shutouts.

Missouri State spread the offense around as Sommer's two shots marked a team high. Nine other Bears recorded a shot, including goalkeeper Teahan.

The Bears, who have 13 points in league play, sit tied atop the standings with one game remaining. The win gives MSU a nine-match win streak over UNI, five straight in Springfield. It is also the sixth time Missouri State has shut out the Panthers in the last nine matches.

Prior to the match, Missouri State honored its six seniors - Tara Bailes, Logan Bisbee, Christine Cross, Jennifer Hamlin, Jeslynne McGrath and Jessica Teahan - who all started their final regular season home match at Plaster Field.

The match was recorded for rebroadcast by Mediacom. It will air on MC22 on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Bears will travel to Evansville (1-11-4, 0-4-0) on Thursday to wrap up the regular season. Missouri State will then host the State Farm MVC Tournament on Friday, November 4 and Sunday, November 6 at Cooper Family Soccer Plex.
