Bears Run Unbeaten Streak to Team Record 10 with 1-1 Draw at Creighton
Oct. 15, 2011
The Missouri State women's soccer team (10-3-2, 3-0-1) got an 87th minute goal to earn a 1-1 tie with Creighton (7-5-2, 2-0-1) in Omaha, Neb., on Saturday afternoon. The Bears are now 8-0-2 since Labor Day and the 10-match unbeaten streak is the longest in team history.
"We got some better chances in the second half," said head coach Rob Brewer. "I am impressed with the resiliency of this team. Clawing back to get this draw is important in the standings. We have a motivated group of players that have worked hard all season. There is great leadership on the field."
Missouri State fell behind early in the first half. The Bluejays' Stephanie Anasi put in a cross from Lauren Cingoranelli in the second minute to put Creighton ahead, 1-0.
The score would remain that way through halftime. The Bears would amp up the pressure in the second half. MSU would rattle off seven shots in the half.
Freshman phenom Bethany Smith would knot the score in the 87th minute. Missouri State would get the ball into the box and a Creighton attempted clear landed at Smith's feet. She drilled a shot from the right side of the box past Bluejay keeper Alicia Montgomery to pull the Bears even at 1-1. The goal is Smith's team-leading seventh on the season.
Both teams would keep the offensive pressure on in overtime, but neither team could find the back of the net a second time.
Missouri State out-shot Creighton, 12-11, with Smith's four shots leading all Bears. Michelle Sommer added three shots for a team-leading 46 this season.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Teahan made three saves to continue the unbeaten streak.
Missouri State will return home for senior night on Saturday, October 22 when they face UNI at 7:00 p.m. at Plaster Field. That night will be "Pack Plaster" night and the match will be recorded and rebroadcast by Mediacom.
