Women's Soccer Extends Win Streak to Seven with OT Goal at SIUE
Oct. 9, 2011
The Missouri State women's soccer team (10-3-1, 3-0-0) ran its win streak to seven games and remained unbeaten in the last nine with a 3-2 overtime victory at SIU Edwardsville (3-7-1) on Sunday afternoon. Shelby Stewart headed in the game-winner with just two seconds left in the first overtime.
The Bears fell behind in the 24th minute as SIUE was able to get a corner kick by Jessica Teahan. It was the first goal Teahan had allowed in 475 minutes.
But Missouri State answered quickly. In the 26th minute, Tara Bailes gathered a loose ball from about 30 yards out. She lifted a forward pass into the box. Freshman Bethany Smith beat the defender and the goalkeeper to the ball and was able to head the ball into the net to knot the match at 1-1.
Smith would strike again in the 31st minute. Missouri State earned a free kick just outside the box. After quick touches by Katelyn Frederickson and Grace Cross, Smith drilled a low, bending shot that squirted through the keeper's hands and in for the go-ahead goal.
Both teams switched goalkeepers at the start of the second half. SIUE put on some early offensive pressure. A Missouri State defensive miscommunication resulted in a game-tying own goal in the 47th minute. Late chances by both teams were unsuccessful and the teams headed to overtime, tied 2-2.
Teahan reentered to begin overtime and came up with a tremendous diving save in the 95th minute.
In the closing seconds of the first overtime, MSU would get the game-winner. Frederickson would once again be involved in the play as she received the ball on the right side of the box. She sent a cross over the keeper's head where Stewart headed in the game-winner at the back post. It was Frederickson's second assist of the match.
The Bears will head to Omaha, Neb., to face conference-rival Creighton on Saturday, October 15 at 4:30 p.m. Missouri State will return home to host UNI on Saturday, October 22 for senior night at 7:00 p.m.
