Women's Soccer Drops Conference Opener at Drake, 3-0
Sept. 22, 2012
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Missouri State women's soccer team (5-6-1, 0-1-0) began conference play with a 3-0 loss at Drake (10-2-0, 1-0-0) in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday evening. The Bears' shutout streak was ended and Drake extended the series streak to six straight matches in which the winning team shut out the opponent.
"Drake is a very organized team," said head coach Rob Brewer. "We put them under pressure at times, but just weren't able to finish. Chasing the game is difficult, but aside from the score, the match was pretty even."
The Bears rattled off the first five shots of the match, forcing DU goalkeeper Kalena Litch to make four saves within the 10-plus minutes of action. Michelle Sommer picked up her second shot of the match in the 21st minute and MSU was out-shooting the Bulldogs, 6-2.
Drake earned a corner kick in the 31st minute. The resulting restart was headed past MSU goalkeeper Chelsea Voet snapping her shutout streak just shy of 347 minutes. The teams went to halftime with DU up 1-0.
The Bears' defense held the deficit at just a single goal until the 76th minute. The Bulldogs tallied their second goal off of a corner kick, this time knocking the shot off the post and in for a two goal lead.
Just minutes later, Drake added a third goal to put the match out of reach in the 79th minute.
Sommer led the Bears in shots with four, the sixth-straight match she has been the leading shot taker for MSU. Shelby Stewart added three shots and Molly Brewer tallied a pair. Eight other Bears recorded a single shot each, but MSU was out-shot 19-17 in the match.
Missouri State will play at UMKC on Monday to close out non-conference play before returning to Plaster Field to open the home conference slate against Evansville on Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m.
