Shelby Stewart Nets Game-Winner in Final Minutes of Home Win over UMKC
Sept. 17, 2013
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (3-7-0) got an 89th minute goal off the foot of senior Shelby Stewart for a thrilling 1-0 home victory against UMKC (3-4-1) at Plaster Field on Tuesday evening. The goal at 88:40 was the sixth latest regulation goal scored in program history. MSU improves to 5-0-0 all-time against UMKC with all five wins coming by a one-goal margin.
"We put a plan in place for tonight's match and made some changes," said head coach Rob Brewer. "The changes were positive. We inserted (Lauren) Fussell into our backline and I think it helped us control the game a bit. It was a total team effort. It is good to be at home and get a win."
The Bears got the initial attack just two minutes into play. MSU earned a corner kick and the resulting play saw Kelsey Goff's shot saved by UMKC. In the 15th minute, Goff was back on the attack, this time thumping the post with her shot attempt.
Missouri State earned four corners in the first half, the only corner kicks in the match. The Bears out-shot the Kangaroos 5-3 in the half, but neither team could put up the go-ahead tally. Freshman goalkeeper Evan Stamp earned the first start of her career and made one save in the scoreless first half.
As the second half began, Missouri State made the planned change in net to split goalkeeper duties in the match. Sophomore Jessica Perry came on and made three second-half saves to earn her third win of the year.
The see-saw second half saw each team register five shots. In the 89th minute, the Bears got the breakthrough they were looking for all match. Sophomore Erin Stewart played a long ball into the box where it was corralled by Molly Huber. Huber settled the ball and found Shelby Stewart wide open in front of the net for the game-winning goal.
The goal is Shelby Stewart's team-leading third of the season. She moves into a tie for sixth in the MVC in goals scored this year. Stewart now has 10 career goals in a Missouri State uniform.
The Bears racked up 10 shots in the match. Goff and Huber led the way with two shots apiece. Huber picked up her third assist of the season, one off of the league leaders.
Missouri State will travel to Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. kick off against the Mavericks in the final non-conference test before conference play begins. The Bears return home on Friday, Sept. 27 for the conference opener versus UNI. The 5:00 p.m. match against the Panthers will also be Senior Night for the Bears.
