Women's Soccer Ends Road Trip with 1-0 Defeat at SIU Edwardsville
Sept. 15, 2013
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (2-7-0) saw its five-match road trip end with a 1-0 loss at SIU Edwardsville (5-1-1) on Sunday afternoon.
The teams played a back-and-forth first half with each team firing a pair of shot attempts. Missouri State's best opportunity came in the 40th minute when the Bears earned their first corner of the match. Michelle Mayne-Nicholls' cross was cleared right to Erin Stewart, but her shot from 25 yards out was halted with a diving stop by the SIUE keeper.
The second half began much the same as each team got in just one shot attempt over the first 30 minutes of the half. After SIUE was assessed a yellow card, however, the game began to open up. In the 77th minute, Shelby Stewart got a shot off for MSU, but is sailed high and wide. Two minutes later, Molly Brewer saw her shot attempt also go wide of net.
In the 82nd minute, the Cougars broke the scoreless tie. A run up the right side saw SIUE with the ball near the end line. The Cougars crossed the ball and found Erin Digiovanni just in front of the net for the tiebreaking goal.
Brewer led the pair with two shot attempts. MSU only mustered five shots in the match.
Goalkeeper Jessica Perry made five saves in the game to keep the Bears close.
The Bears return home on Tuesday, September 17 for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against UMKC. The match against the Kangaroos will be televised on Mediacom, check local listing for broadcast times.
