Women's Soccer Wins 3-1, Takes Fifth-Straight from ORU
Sept. 2, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (3-4-0) defeated Oral Roberts (2-3-1) by a 3-1 margin in Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Voet made four saves to extend the Bears' win streak against the Golden Eagles to five. The victory also marked the Bears first win away from Plaster Field this season.
"We got a lot of hard work out of our midfield today," said head coach Rob Brewer. "We got the early lead today and that helped out our defense. Overall, I am pleased with the weekend, getting a win today and going into overtime on Friday on the road."
Missouri State took an early lead in the 10th minute of play. Freshman Molly Brewer picked up her first assist of the match when she found a wide-open Rachel Weimer at the right post. Weimer found the back of the net for her second goal of the year.
A few minutes later, Michelle Sommer and Cassie Le each tested ORU keeper Helen Erb. The remainder of the half was the MSU defense continuing to shut out the Golden Eagles as ORU strung together the final six shots of the half.
The Bears opened the second half and again Molly Brewer began the scoring play. She found Weimer for the second time in the match, but her shot was saved. However, Erb was unable to hang on to the rebound and Lauren Wendt took advantage, scoring her first career goal.
Missouri State added to its advantage again in the 64th minute. Sommer picked off an ORU clearing attempt and drilled a 30-yard shot for an unassisted goal. It was her third of the season, tying her with Shelby Stewart for the team lead.
ORU finally found the back of the net in the 79th minute. A free kick from 25 yards out snapped the Golden Eagles' 361 minute scoreless streak against the Bears.
Missouri State will wrap up the current four-match road trip at Kansas on Friday (Sept. 7) at 5:00 p.m. before MSU returns to Plaster Field for a three-game home stand beginning on September 9 with a 1:00 p.m. match against SIU Edwardsville. The game against the Cougars will be taped by Mediacom and tickets can be purchased at the gate on game day.
