SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State women's soccer team (1-1-0) got an early goal and kept another clean sheet at the Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium to open the regular season home slate with a 2-0 win over visiting Utah State (0-2-0) on Sunday afternoon. Due to the extreme heat, the match was moved up a couple of hours, but both teams battled under the adverse conditions.

"She's (Brooke Zimmerman) a quality player and did a very good job today," said head coach Rob Brewer. "I hope it's an advantage, but I know how much surface matters," continued Brewer on the home field.

Missouri State ensured history was on its side when the Bears tallied the first official goal at Allison South Stadium. In the sixth minute of action, MSU took its second corner kick of the match. After a brief scramble, the ball fell to the feet of Lauren Fussell, who drilled a shot into a crowded box. The ball was blocked and deflected to an open Brooke Zimmerman for an open net goal, the first of her career.

In the 39th minute, the Aggies came close to drawing even. Lexie Morgan send a low line drive into the box at a bit of an angle, forcing MSU keeper Jessica Perry to make a diving save, one of six in the match.

Zimmerman again got on the score sheet in the second half. She took a feed from Molly Brewer up the left side to the edge of the box. Zimmerman crossed the ball to Molly Huber, who battled through a defender to double the Bears lead in the 54th minute.

Perry was tested two more times after the Bears' second goal, but was able to keep the shutout and victory intact. It was the fifth shutout of Perry's MSU career and first of the year.

Huber led the Bears with four shots in the match. Fussell, Zimmerman and Katie Davis added two shots each.

Missouri State will head to Tulsa, Okla., for the Holiday Inn City Center Tulsa Invitational next weekend. MSU will face host Tulsa on Friday night before wrapping up the weekend against Oral Roberts on Sunday. The Bears return home to Allison South on Sunday, September 7 for a 1:00 p.m. fixture against Arkansas State. A free youth clinic will follow that match for grades K-8.
