At Missouri State: Jessica Smits will provide senior leadership on the backline this season. 2008: Smits became a third-year letterwinner after collecting three assists during her junior campaign. She was named to the All-MVC Tournament team, the All-MVC second team and the academic All-MVC honorable mention squad. Smits started all 19 matches for the Bears. Her assists came in victories over Oral Roberts (9/26), UNI (10/10) and Indiana State (10/31). 2007: Smits saw action in 18 matches with 15 starts as a sophomore. Defensively, Smits helped lead the Bears to a 0.81 goals-against average and seven opponent shutouts. 2006: In her freshman campaign, Smits played in all 21 matches and made four starts. Smits started the season opener against Arkansas and the final three matches of the season, including both MVC Tournament contests. Smits finished the season with three assists, one shy of the team lead. She had two assists, including the game-winning helper on Lauren Heck's overtime goal, as the Bears defeated the Evansville Purple Aces, 4-3 (10/8). Smits also assisted on Caroline Sweeney's game-winning overtime goal to defeat Alabama A&M (9/8). Background: Smits joined Missouri State after leading Jenks High School to four consecutive conference championships and the Oklahoma state title during her senior year. Smits recorded three goals as a senior and helped her team to a 15-2 overall record. She was awarded all-state, all-conference and all-metro honors as a senior and served as team captain. Smits was also a member of the Tulsa Soccer Club that won the state cup title and a trip to the regionals her senior year. In her junior campaign, Smits guided her team to a second place state finish after placing first in district and conference competition. She was selected to the all-district team and was awarded all-conference honorable mention honors. Personal: Smits is the daughter of Harry and Annette Smits and was born February 13, 1988. She is an exercise and movement science major.
