Welber Takes Second, Bears Sixth at ORU Shootout
Freshman Kelsey Welber tied for second place at the ORU Shootout in Tulsa, Okla., Tuesday (Oct. 7) and led Missouri State to a sixth-place finish in the 18-team field. On a cool, blustery day at the Meadowbrook Country Club, Welber carded an 80, but moved up from third place the previous day and finished the tournament with 72-75-80--227. The Bears shot 308-316-317--941as a team, two strokes behind fifth-place Northern Arizona.
Oral Roberts won the team title after posting 301-305-307--913, comfortably outdistancing runner UTEP, which shot 302-308-314--924. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was third with 310-313-309--932 and Lamar fourth at 309-309-318--936. After NAU and the Bears came Oklahoma City (956), Arkansas State (960), UMKC (963) and Wichita State (965) rounding out the top 10. Drury (969) was 11th, and McLennan Community College (970) 12th, followed by Southern Nazarene (972), Texas-Pan American (975), North Dakota State and Centenary (980), Louisiana-Monroe (981) and Northeastern State (989).
ORU's Christy Carter ran away with medalist honors, firing 73-70-76--219, while Welber tied with Kelsey Kipp of UMKC, Sydney Cox of Oklahoma City and Cassie Huffer of Arkansas State.
Senior Amy Phalajivin and freshman Catherine Dolan were second for the Bears and 18th overall with 235 totals. Phalajivin carded 78-78-79 and Dolan shot 76-81-78. Senior Lindsey Wellenstein tied for 49th with 82-82-80--244 and junior Mallory Mahon tied for 58th with 84-83-80--247.
The Bears are idle next week, but back in action at the Missouri Valley Conference Preview, Oct. 20-21, in Panora, Iowa.
