Dolan Falls in Playoff, Finishes Second in State Am
July 13, 2012
Catherine Dolan put up a strong defense of her Missouri Amateur title over the last three days in suburban Kansas City, but eventually had to settle for second place.
The Ballwin, Mo., native found herself tied with legendary St. Louis golfer Ellen Port after 54 holes of regulation at Shadow Glen Golf Club in Olathe, Kan. The two went to a sudden-death playoff, where Port drained a 25-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole before Dolan's 10-footer slipped by the hole and gave Port her eighth state title.
Dolan fired 71-72--143 over the first two days and took a one-stroke lead over Port into the final round. The two battled back and forth throughout the day, each holding the lead at numerous points. Each birdied the final hole, Dolan to shoot 74 and Port to card 73, and force extra holes.
A four-time all-conference performer for the Bears who just completed her eligibility in May, Dolan was trying to make it two state titles in a row after capturing last year's championship at Bellerive Country Club in suburban St. Louis.
