Women's Golf Pre-Championship Poll Predicts Fourth Place MVC Finish for Bears
April 17, 2014
ST. LOUIS - Missouri State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2014 MVC Women's Golf Championship, according to a pre-championship coaches' poll announced on Thursday (April 17). The Bears won the MVC women's golf title in 2001 and 2012.
The league's coaches voted Wichita State (95 total points) as the favorite to win three-day tournament, with seven of nine first-place votes. Southern Illinois (91) was picked second, followed by Indiana State (69). Tied with the Bears (65) for fourth is Illinois State (65), last year's conference champion.
Rounding out the poll are UNI (45), Bradley (43), Evansville (34), Loyola (27), and Drake (16).
"This is a bit of an unusual position for us to go into this tournament being picked where we are, but we have nothing to lose and are certainly capable," said head coach Kevin Kane. "It's about having the right focus and a positive attitude. The favorite doesn't often win this tournament and there's been no dominant team this year, so it's anyone's championship to win."
The five Missouri State golfers to compete at the Championship will be Ariel Tidwell, the all-conference selection from a year ago, along with Estefania Acosta, Chiara Citterio, Caroline Boone, and Megan Furnish.
"It'll be all about who handles the pressure the best and who's best around the greens. Everyone can hit it pretty well at our level, so it's about the short game," said Kane.
The 54-hole tournament will be played at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill. (Bradley hosts). The team champion advances to the NCAA Regionals. The 10 teams will have practice rounds Saturday, and the tournament begins Sunday at 9:00 a.m. (CST). Teams will play 18 holes each day (Sunday-Tuesday). Fans are invited to attend free of charge.
