The Missouri State women's golf team took a 12-shot lead Sunday (March 18) after the first round of the Monterey Bay Invitational in Monterey, Calif. The Bears posted 303 on a cool and windy day that saw most scores soaring at the par 72, 6018-yard Del Monte Golf Course.

The Bears also dominated the individual standings in the first round, led by junior Hermine Greyling, who fired a 73 to take a one-shot lead on Julia Roth of Central Arkansas. Four other Bears held down spots in the top five. Senior Kelsey Welber and freshman Chiara Citterio, competing as an individual, are tied for third after posting 76. Senior Catherine Dolan and freshman Megan Thompson each shot 77 and are tied for fifth. Junior Emma Clegg is tied for 15th after shooting 79 and senior Emily Potts had an 82 while competing as an individual.

In the team standings, Winthrop is the Bears' closest challenger with a 315, while Houston Baptist is two more back at 317. Illinois State is fourth with 319, followed by Columbia (321), Central Arkansas (325), Cal Poly and Wichita State (326), Stephen F. Austin (329), Drake (342), Nebraska-Omaha (347), Creighton and Cal State Bakersfield (353), and St. Francis, N.Y. (390).

Monday's second round begins with tee times at 8 a.m. PDT.
