MVC Championship Day 2 Results
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – With just 18 holes remaining at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship, Missouri State is well within striking distance of capturing its second team title. The Bears, who were the unanimous pre-championship favorites, dropped one spot in the team standings on Monday (April 23) to third, but are just three shots off the lead.
That lead pack includes Northern Iowa, who sits atop the leaderboard for the second consecutive day of competition (299-311=610), Bradley (305-307=612), who jumped ahead of the Bears on Monday, and Missouri State (300-313=613). Four-time defending champion Illinois State (619) and Southern Illinois (620) round out the top-five contenders.
“It’s obviously a shootout tomorrow,” head coach Kevin Kane said. “You can’t ask for a better situation than being in the last group on the last day, playing for a championship. We’re going to enjoy it and see what happens.”
Like Sunday, the Bears had three players in the top 10 after 36 holes. Senior Kelsey Welber recorded the team’s best performance of the day with a 4-over-76, moving her into a tie for fourth. After finishing the first day in a tie for third place, senior Catherine Dolan and junior Emma Clegg each posted an 80 and fell into a tie for ninth.
Freshman Megan Thompson picked up her game on Monday with a 77 and moved up 10 spots to 15th. Rounding out the MSU golfers was junior Hermine Greyling (t-22nd), who registered an 81 to bring her two-day total to 158.
Bradley’s Thea Hedemann holds a one-shot advantage in the individual standings (73-74=147). Welber is four strokes back in the race for the individual championship.
Tuesday’s final 18-hole round is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET with cold weather and likely frost conditions for early morning in Terre Haute.
