SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. - Missouri State survived a challenging first round of the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship, firing a 332 at The Club at Porto Cima on Sunday (April 21). Through 18 holes, the Bears are in fifth place and only seven strokes off leader Wichita State.

"It was a really tough golf course today," said Missouri State head coach Kevin Kane after Sunday's first round. "Today is one of those days where our scores are high, but it's all relative. We're not out of it and we still have two-thirds of the tournament to go."

Individually, reigning MVC champion Missouri State was led by freshman golfer Ariel Tidwell, who finished the first day tied for eighth. Tidwell, who is only three strokes out of first place, had a team-high two birdies on Sunday, carding a 7-over-79.

Sophomore Chiara Citterio had the best front-nine performance for the Bears, shooting a +4. She finished second among Missouri State golfers with a first-round 83 and is tied for 15th.

Playing in the No. 4 spot for MSU, freshman Lindsey Eisenreich shot the Bears' third best score, a 13-over-85, which tied for 21st in the 50-golfer field. The first-year player from Fenton, Mo., joined Tidwell with a birdie of her own on Hole 16.

Sophomore Megan Thompson and senior Emma Clegg, the Bears' top-two golfers entering the weekend, struggled on the first day of action. Thompson (t-21st) posted a 13-over-85, while Clegg (t-39th) is five strokes behind her sophomore teammate after shooting an 18-over-90.

At the top of the team standings is Wichita State (325), who pulled ahead after a violation ruling on Bradley's No. 2 golfer. The ruling set the Braves (328) back four strokes, moving Southern Illinois into second place at 326. Rounding out the top five is Indiana State (330) and the Bears (332).

Bradley freshman Danielle Lemek leads the medalist race after carding a 4-over-76, and last year's champion Katie Jean trails by just a stroke at +5. Five others are tied for third at 6-over.

For the second round of action on Monday, host Missouri State will be paired with Indiana State and Illinois State, beginning at 9 a.m. (CST). To follow the 2013 MVC Championships, visit the Missouri State tournament central page or live stats at
