DALLAS, Texas – The Missouri State’s women’s golf team faces an uphill battle after finishing Friday’s first round of the SMU Dallas Athletic Club Invitational in 14th place. Sophomore Megan Thompson led the Bears in the opening round with a 9-over-81. The second-year player from Ballyclare, Northern Ireland ended the afternoon in 49th place.

Kansas State has a one-stroke advantage heading into Saturday after shooting a first-round 294 (+6). Joining the Wildcats in the lead pack is fourth-ranked Oklahoma (295) and 35th-ranked Denver just two strokes behind (296). The 15-team field is loaded with great competition including seven schools present in the top 50 of GolfStat’s latest team rankings: No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 19 Oklahoma State, No. 23 Notre Dame, No. 32 SMU, No. 35 Denver, No. 46 Ohio State and No. 50 UTSA.

The Bears will look to get their clubs going on the second day at the Dallas Athletic Club. On Friday, Missouri State combined for a team score of 337, by far the highest one-round total of the 2012-13 campaign. The previous high for the Bears was 327 in the final round of the UALR Classic (March 26).

The next closest finisher for Missouri State was sophomore Chiara Citterio (t-63rd), who posted a 12-over-84. Rounding out the Bear lineup was freshman Ariel Tidwell (67th) with a score of 85, freshman Lindsey Eisenreich (t-70th) at 87, and senior Emma Clegg (75th) at 90.
