First-Round Loss in MAC Tournament Ends Bears Season
A first-round loss in the Mid-American Conference Tournament to Miami (Ohio) ended the field hockey season, Thursday, in Muncie, Ind. The third-seeded Redhawks downed the sixth-seeded Bears, 9-1.
The Bears found themselves on the wrong side of a one-sided affair, as the Redhawks earned 13 penalty corners to the Bears' two; outshot them 25 to two, with 22 of those shots on goal; and controlled possession in the Bears end for most of the game.
After Miami opened the game's scoring in the third minute, the Bears struck right back to tie it at 1-1. Senior Melissa Lantz (Wildwood, Mo.) sent a cross into the box that junior Stephanie Chase (Chesterfield, Mo.) deflected in for the Bears' lone goal of the game. The assist was Lantz's ninth, while Chase scored her fourth goal of the season.
But the Bears had no answer for Miami's offense. The Redhawks went on to score eight unanswered goals, with Kate Snyder and Rachel Walz chipping in two apiece. In all, seven different Miami players scored a goal and 12 different players recorded a shot on goal.
Miami advances to the semifinals to face the second-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes.
The loss ends the careers of three terrific seniors, Lantz, Alyssa Hile (Wildwood, Mo.) and Molly Busch (San Jose, Calif). Lantz finishes her career tied for sixth on the all-time goals scored list with 38. The three combined to play in 242 games as Bears, with 227 starts.
