Missouri State Field Hockey Takes State Bragging Rights with Shutout of Saint Louis
The Missouri State field hockey team blanked Saint Louis 3-0 Tuesday evening at Plaster Field. The win puts the Bears at 5-3 on the season while Saint Louis falls to 3-6.
The first half started off a bit slow but got kick started with junior Melissa Lantz’s eighth goal of the season in the 15th minute off a deflection from sophomore Stephanie Chase.
Freshman Kristen Pettey scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season off of passes from senior Sarah Johnson, her second and third assists on the season.
The Bears did well moving the ball up and down the field, with the defense making key break ups to stop many of the Billiken’s attempts at starting a scoring drive.
Senior Sandy Fulkerson was credited with a defensive save in the second half when Bears’ goalkeeper senior Jessica Schuster was caught farther out of the goal than intended. Schuster collected the shutout with 10 saves.
The Bears had 11 of 16 shots come on goal, while 11 of 12 of SLU’s shots were on goal. Saint Louis received more penalty corners (8-4) than the Bears.
In three games against in-state rivals, Saint Louis for two and one against Lindenwood, Missouri State has collected two shutouts in three wins. The Bears have also out scored both opponents 14-2. The Bears blanked Lindenwood 8-0 on Sept. 9 at home and won on the road in St. Louis 3-2.
Missouri State’s home stand continues this weekend, opening the conference season with Miami (Ohio) on Sat., Sept. 27, and Ball State on Sun., Sept. 28. Both games are set to start at 11 a.m.
