SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Road warriors. There's your early theme for 2013 Missouri State field hockey squad.

The field hockey Bears announced their 2013 schedule Friday (June 21), a 17-game slate that includes one scrimmage, three home matches, nine true road contests and four matches at neutral sites. The Bears' docket also includes match-ups against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams Stanford and Michigan.

The nine matches on the road are the most for the team since 2011, when they played 11 times on enemy turf.

The Bears will start their season with an Aug. 25 scrimmage at noon against Iowa in Iowa City, then start the regular season with a pair of matches on the West Coast. The Bears will take on UC Davis on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m., and then play a neutral-site contest against Pacific at Berkeley, Calif.

The Bears' return to the middle part of the country is slated to commence with a Sept. 6 match at Ohio State at 2 p.m., and will be followed up the next day with an 11 a.m. neutral-site game against Bucknell on Ohio State's home turf. The Bears look to avenge last season's 10-1 loss to Ohio State in Columbus.

A week later, head coach Gabby Gomez Sosa's squad will travel to Bloomington, Ind. for a Sept. 13 match-up with the Indiana Hoosiers at 3 p.m. The Bears will stay in Bloomington the next day for a neutral match against Robert Morris at 2 p.m.

The final two games of MSU's initial stretch away from home are slated for a neutral contest against Bryant University in St. Louis on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. On Sept. 27, the Bears will take on the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor, Mich. at 3 p.m.

The start of October will bring with it Missouri State's first match at home, an Oct. 1 match-up against Saint Louis at 6 p.m. The Bears have had a history of success against the Billikens, as they've won nine of the last 11 meetings and own a 59-28-2 all-time record.

On Oct. 4, MSU is slated to kick off its Mid-American Conference schedule with a 12 p.m. away contest at Kent State. The Golden Flashes dealt the Bears a heartbreaking, 4-3 overtime loss last season at Plaster Field, which dashed Missouri State's hopes of qualifying for the MAC Tournament.

The Bears next return to Iowa City on Oct. 7 for another match with Iowa. Unlike the August scrimmage, this 3 p.m. contest counts.

Missouri State resumes conference play later that week with a home match-up against Ohio on Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. The Bobcats knocked off the Bears by a 5-1 tally last season in Athens, Ohio.

The Bears follow that game with their final three road games of the season, beginning with an Oct. 13 trip to St. Louis to complete the home-and-home series with the Billikens at 1 p.m. Gomez Sosa's troops will finish the year with road conference games at Miami of Ohio (Oct. 19) and at Central Michigan (Oct. 26, 12 p.m.) before coming home for senior day on Nov. 3 against Ball State at 1 p.m.

The top four teams in the MAC regular-season standings will advance to the MAC Tournament, which will be hosted by Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 8-9 in Oxford, Ohio.

The field hockey Bears had a 5-11 record in 2012 and have 18 returning student-athletes, including 2012 all-conference picks Holly Scherer (So., Belmont, Ontario) and Hillary Lawless (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.).
