Oct. 30, 2011
Springfield, Mo. -
The Missouri State field hockey squad (7-11-0, 4-6-0) defeated Ball State (4-15-0, 4-6-0) on their senior day this Sunday morning (Oct. 30) at Plaster Field. The Bears 4-3 victory earned them their fourth conference win this season.
"Everyone came out and played strong again today," said head coach Gabby Gomez Sosa. "All of the seniors played wonderful, and Casey, of course, had a great game."
Missouri State would strike first in the match. Sophomore Hillary Lawless scored her tenth goal of the season for the Bears late in the 16th minute of play, off a pass from senior Lori Sinclair. Ball State would answer back with a goal of their own just eight minutes later. Missouri State was determined to stay on top going into halftime, as Lawless passed it ahead to senior Casey Bayliss. Bayliss then dribbled it in from the 20 yard line and flicked it into the upper right corner, to put Missouri State ahead 2-1.
Ball State would tie the match up in the second half, but the Bears would continue to fight hard on senior day. Bayliss came up big with two goals in the second half to put the Bears on top 4-2. Her first goal of the half came from a give and go with Lawless in the 50th minute of play. Bayliss would get on a breakaway just six minutes later, finding the back of the net for the second time that half and 14th time this season. This was Bayliss' second hat trick of the 2011 season.
In a tug of war effort, Ball State would respond back with another goal in the 58th minute of play, bringing the match to 4-3, Bears leading. Missouri State would hold the lead the rest of the way, getting their seventh win of the season. The Bears last victory (Oct. 29) earned them the most wins in a season since 2004, making today's victory an even sweeter addition.
Missouri State's defense had another strong showing with sophomore Laura Tavares and junior Chelsey Medlock each racking up a defensive save in the match. Bears' goalkeeper Andrea Bain had seven saves.
The Bears will travel to Athens, Ohio next to the play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The tournament runs Nov. 3-5. Times and opponents will be announced as soon as they are made available.
