Oct. 29, 2011
Springfield, Mo. -
The Missouri State field hockey team (6-11-0, 2-7-0) came up big in a 2-0 decision against Miami (Ohio) (6-14-0, 4-6-0) on Saturday morning. The victory gives the Bears their first shutout and second conference win of the season.
“I’m very proud of these young ladies today,” said head coach Gabby Gomez Sosa. “Everyone came out strong, especially our seniors, and we played smart hockey.”
The Bears got on the board in the 17th minute of play as freshman Abbey Heller passed it in to fellow freshman Sarah Bradley. The goal was Bradley’s seventh goal of the season for Missouri State. The Bears’ lockdown defense would hold the 1-0 lead on into halftime.
“Everyone was very patient at defense,” said Gomez Sosa. “We will carry on the momentum and finish strong tomorrow, as well.”
Missouri State’s second goal of the match would come in the 39th minute of play, as Bradley passed it into the circle to find sophomore Hillary Lawless behind the Red Hawk’s keeper. Lawless slammed it into the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season.
The Bears had tackles galore, holding Miami (Ohio) scoreless the rest of the way. Missouri State’s goalkeeper Andrea Bain finished the match with six saves.
The field hockey Bears will conclude regular season play tomorrow (Oct. 30) taking on Ball State at 11 a.m. on Plaster Field for their Senior Day. After that, Missouri State will head to Athens, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Nov. 3.
