The Missouri State field hockey team defeated conference opponent Miami (Ohio) 3-1 on a sun-splashed afternoon in Springfield, Mo. The win moved the Bears to 4-6 overall and 2-0 in MAC competition.
The Bears faced an early 1-0 deficit after Miami's Chrissy Zessin knocked in a goal in the 19th minute of the first half.
However, Missouri State junior forward Hillary Lawless continued her recent goal-scoring spree. In the 27th minute, Lawless took a pass from senior defender Reiann Stoute and found the back of the cage for her sixth goal of the year.
The 1-1 tie held into the half, but Missouri State freshman Holly Scherer busted up the deadlock with an unassisted goal just seven minutes into the second half. The goal was the first of Scherer's career. Lawless capped the scoring when she took a pass from Scherer and got past Miami goalkeeper Christina Heston to score uncontested in front of the net.
Missouri State out-shot Miami 12-9. Miami had 16 penalty corners to Missouri State's six.
The Bears will hit the road and play Liberty on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. The game is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
