The Missouri State Lady Bears (6-3, 0-0 MVC) visit Iowa City for the first time in 11 years Wednesday when they take on the Iowa Hawkeyes (8-3, 0-0 Big Ten) on the front end of a two-game road trip that ends Dec. 21 with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Southeast Missouri State.
Carver-Hawkeye Arena remains the site of one of Missouri State’s most historic women’s basketball wins, a 61-60 overtime victory over the host school in the 1992 NCAA Tournament.
With three non-conference games left before MVC plays starts Jan. 3, the Lady Bears are one victory away from securing a winning non-league record for a fourth consecutive season.
Missouri State leads Iowa 4-3 in the all-time series with a 1-2 mark in Iowa City.
The Lady Bears and Hawkeyes have had some memorable meetings in the past, most notably a 61-60 overtime victory by MSU in the 1992 NCAA Second Round in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Secelia Winkfield’s shot with 1.5 seconds left in that contest propelled the Lady Bears to the Sweet Sixteen on their way to a Final Four appearance.
The teams also met in the 2005 WNIT semifinals, with Missouri State wining 89-80 at Hammons Student Center.
Iowa won the last meeting 79-70 in Kansas City in the 2006 season-opener.
Missouri State is 10-2 all-time against Southeast Missouri State with a 3-2 record in Cape Girardeau. The schools took a 20-year break in the series from 1982-2002, and MSU is 4-1 since the renewal on Nov. 26, 2002.
Missouri State won the last meeting 72-46 in 2009 in Springfield.
Iowa is 8-3 overall and receiving votes in both major top 25 polls. The Hawkeyes are 3-0 against Missouri Valley Conference schools, with home wins against Illinois State (74-64) and UNI (68-46) and a road win at Drake (82-65)
Senior Morgan Johnson leads the club with 18.1 points and 7.5 rebounds.
As a team, Iowa scores 67.4 points and allows 60.0 while shooting 42.4 percent overall, 31.7 percent on 3-pointers and 75.1 percent from the foul line.
Southeast Missouri State is 5-6 on the season with victories against Western Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Texas-Pan American, Arkansas State and Wright State.
The Redhawks score 57.1 points per game and allow 60.5 while shooting 37.4 percent overall, 30.2 from 3-point land and 69.1 percent from the free throw line.
