Garrison Earns Second Straight MVC Player of the Week Honor
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - After posting her second 30-point performance in three games to lead Missouri State to its second win of the season Saturday at Toledo, junior guard Casey Garrison received her second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week nod, the league office announced Monday.
Garrison capped another big week by totaling 32 points - including 17 straight for Missouri State late in the game - to lead the Lady Bears to a 73-69 road win over Toledo this past Saturday. The win snapped the Rockets' 14-game home win streak and handed the Lady Bears their second victory over a 2010 postseason qualifier. In MSU's two outings last week, she averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals. With the score tied at 53-53 Saturday, Garrison's jumper with 8:00 left on the clock started the critical run for MSU, in which the junior guard personally outscored the Rockets 14-5. Her three-pointer one minute later gave the Lady Bears a five-point cushion and she would connect from long range again with 3:53 to play to make it a 65-58 ball game. Garrison finished her offensive flurry with five free throws in six attempts in the final 4:40 of the contest to salt away the win for MSU. Garrison's outburst followed a furious rally that saw the Rockets erase a 14-point deficit to seize a 50-46 lead mid-way through the second half. But Garrison took over from that point, going 4-of-5 from the field over a six-and-a-half minute period to stretch the Lady Bear lead back to nine. The Bolivar, Mo., native, who also pulled down seven rebounds and recorded a game-high four steals, totaled 21 points after intermission.
Garrison also led all scorers with 20 points in Monday night's loss to DePaul, going 6-of-7 from the foul line and corralling six rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals in the setback.
Through three games, Garrison leads the Valley in scoring (28.3 ppg), three-point field goal percentage (.818) and steals (3.3) and is tied for fourth in assists per game (4.0).
The honor for Garrison is her 10th MVC weekly citation, after earning five previous player of the week awards. She was named MVC Newcomer of the Week four times in 2008-09 and captured the league's Freshman of the Year honor as well.
MSU will take on Louisiana Tech Saturday (Nov. 27) at 2:05 p.m. to kick-off a five-game home stand at JQH Arena. Tickets for all Missouri State home games are available through the MSU Athletics Box Office by calling (417) 836-7678.
