SPRINGFIELD -- A great first night of basketball at Missouri State saw both the Bears and Lady Bears entertain a generous gathering of MSU fans Saturday night at JQH Arena in the annual Twilight Tipoff event, presented by McDonald's of the Ozarks.
The Lady Bears started the night with a three-point contest, which was won by Kenzie Williams who hit 18 total threes over the three rounds of the competition.
In the scrimmage, the maroon-clad returnees topped the freshmen 30-11. Hannah Wilkerson led the returning squad with 9 points, followed by Williams and Bry Snow with 6 apiece. Also scoring for the returnees were Whitney Edie (5), Desiree Phillips (2), and Karly Buer (2). Wilkerson had the 20-minute session's only three-pointers, as she knocked down a pair of long-range jumpers.
The talented crop of Lady Bear newcomers saw Alex Hillyer score 4 points, while Mikala McGhee, Tori Henderson and Hillary Chvatal scored 2 points apiece, and Nicole Smallwood scored 1.
On the men's side, it was Anthony Downing who stole the spotlight as he scored a game-high 15 points for the Bears on 6-of-9 shooting with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. But Downing's White squad was no match for the balanced Maroon club in a 36-26 victory for assistant coach Derrick Tilmon's troops.
Nathan Scheer scored 10 points for Maroon, while Gavin Thurman added 9, Keith Pickens scored 8, Christian Kirk had 7, and Marcus Marshall had 2. Kirk had a game-high 9 rebounds, while Marshall -- who won the dunk contest to start the night -- had 3 assists and 3 steals.
The White squad, coached by assistant Jermaine Henderson, was rounded out with scoring from Michael Simpson (3), Bruce Marshall (3), Tomie Aromona (3), and Drew Wilson (2). Wilson had 6 rebounds.
The teams combined to hit 10 three-pointers by six different players.
Preseason exhibition play begins Oct. 30 for the Bears against Missouri Western (7:05 p.m.), while the women entertain Truman State on Nov. 4 at 2:05 p.m.
