SPRINGFIELD -- Missouri State University women’s basketball head coach Nyla Milleson named Steve Yang as the new Director of Basketball Operations today (June 1), filling the opening left by Jerise Freeman, who took a job on the women’s basketball staff at Newman University in her native Wichita.
As director of operations, Yang will oversee Missouri State’s film exchange and equipment operations, while coordinating team travel arrangements and assisting with Lady Bear basketball camp operations. His appointment is subject to the approval of the Missouri State University Board of Governors.
“We’re very pleased to have Steve join the Lady Bear family,” Milleson said. “He has gained valuable experience under a veteran head coach in Steve Jenkins at Evangel, and his organization and attention to detail will be a valuable asset in this position during the school year as well as with our camps in the summer months.”
Yang comes to Missouri State after four seasons as an assistant coach and video coordinator for the men’s basketball team at Evangel University in Springfield. Prior to Evangel, Yang served as a assistant at McCook Community College in Nebraska during the 2007-08 season, and as the Varsity, JV and Junior High head coach at Miami High School in Amoret, Mo., in 2006-07.
Yang has served as an instructor at basketball camps at Missouri State, Kansas, Marquette, Wisconsin, Evangel, Minnesota and with Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Originally from Tulsa, Okla., Yang earned his Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Missouri State in 2006, and followed that up with a Master of Science in Administrative Studies and Sports Management from MSU in 2010.
