St. LOUIS -- In an effort to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes, the Missouri Valley Conference, in partnership with State Farm, has created the MVC State Farm Good Neighbor Award. Missouri State women’s basketball player Christiana Shorter is among 10 student-athletes named by Commissioner Doug Elgin as the honorees for the 2012 winter season.

A junior forward from Tulsa, Shorter earned second-team all-MVC and MVC all-defensive team recognition this season with averages of 12.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and a team-high 72 steals for the 22-8 Lady Bears.

Shorter ranks fourth in school history in double-doubles (21), fifth in blocks (81), eighth in rebounds (714), 15th in steals (166) and 17 in scoring (1,175). She collected multiple steals in seven straight games midway through the league season, including four or more in four consecutive contests with a high of seven on Jan. 27 vs. Indiana State.

A four-time member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, Shorter was the Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 27, 2011. Other off-the-court activities include serving as women’s basketball’s representative on MSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and participating in the MVC Just Read Program, Champions Committed to Kids and Adopt-a-Street.

In order to be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their Good Neighbor Award honorees.

State Farm Insurance is a long-time sponsor of the Missouri Valley Conference and serves as title sponsor for all 18 MVC championship events. Also, State Farm is a prominent sponsor of the league’s television network and a sponsor of the Missouri Valley Conference’s community outreach program, “Just Read!”
