The Missouri State Lady Bears (14-16, 8-10 MVC) take on Wichita State (23-6, 14-4) for the second time in a week Friday at 6:07 p.m. in the quarterfinal round of the MVC Tournament in St. Charles, Mo.
The seventh-seeded Lady Bears defeated No. 10 Southern Illinois by a 61-39 final on Thursday, and look to beat No. 2 WSU for the first time this season with a semifinal berth on the line. Friday's winner advances to the 4 p.m. Saturday game against the winner of UNI and Illinois State.
Missouri State faces an uphill climb to the championship, with four wins in four days needed to claim the league's automatic NCAA Tournament berth, but not an unprecedented one as four teams in the eight seasons of the current format have advanced to the conference tournament championship game from the first round, including MSU's championship run from the No. 7 seed in 2006.
MSU Pep Rallies
Lady Bear fans are encouraged to gather in the lobby of the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel (900 Westport Plaza, St. Louis, Mo.) at 4:45 p.m. Thursday to cheer the team on as it departs for The Family Arena to play SIU.
Additional pep rallies will take place as long as the Lady Bears remain in the tournament, with start times set for 3:30 p.m. Friday, 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the Sheraton.
Missouri State is 45-31 all-time against Wichita State, including a 2-3 mark in the MVC Tournament. The Shockers have turned the tide of late, however, going 16-4 in the last 20 meetings.
Scouting Wichita State
Wichita State is 23-6 on the season and tied for the MVC title with a 14-4 league record. MVC Defensive Player of the Year Alex Harden leads the team with 16.9 points and 5.1 assists per game, while Jamillah Bonner (12.8) and Michelle Price (12.2) also score in double figures.
The Shockers, who lead the MVC in several offensive and defensive categories, average 71.7 points per game and allow 57.9 while shooting 44.4 percent overall, 31.7 percent on 3-pointers and 69.5 percent from the foul line.
Earlier This Season
Wichita State swept the regular-season series, winning 98-68 in Springfield and 93-56 in Wichita. The Shockers shot 52.6 percent in the two games while forcing 45 Missouri State turnovers.
The Lady Bears enter this year's MVC Tournament with a league-best 36-17 (.679) all-time mark in the event since the initial Gateway Conference meet in 1983. Since 1991, Missouri State has played in 13 of the 22 tournament championship games and is the only school to win the title four straight years (1991-94). Missouri State will be trying for its 10th tourney title, with wins in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2006 to its credit.
Missouri State enters the tourney with all-time records of 1-4 in the opening round, 13-5 in the quarterfinals, 13-4 in the semifinals and 9-4 in championship games.
