The Missouri State Lady Bears (14-13, 6-9 MVC) embark on their final road trip of the regular season this weekend when they visit two of the league’s top four teams in Indiana State (16-9, 8-6) at 6:05 p.m. Friday and Illinois State (18-8, 10-4) at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.
The Lady Bears carry a two-game winning streak into March and have pulled to within one-half game of Evansville for the all-important sixth seed in the MVC Tournament, which begins March 14 in St. Charles, Mo.
Missouri State continues its difficult closing schedule at JQH Arena on March 9 when league-leading Wichita State comes to town for Senior Day.
Missouri State holds a 49-15 series lead over the Sycamores, including a 20-10 mark in Terre Haute, where the Lady Bears have not lost since 2008. Indiana State broke MSU’s nine-game winning streak in the series earlier this season.
Missouri State leads Illinois State 34-29 in the all-time series and has won four of the last five meetings, including the last three. The Lady Bears are 13-17 all-time at ISU.
First Meetings This Season
Indiana State ended a nine-game losing streak in the series with a 71-67 victory over the Lady Bears Feb. 1 in Springfield. MSU trailed by 13 points in the second half and battled back for a 56-all tie but never regained the lead.
Missouri State beat the Redbirds 91-76 on Feb. 3 at JQH Arena. The Lady Bears shot 50 percent from the field and placed five scorers in double figures, led by Whitney Edie’s 20 points and 13 rebounds. Missouri State out-scored ISU 56-26 in the paint.
Scouting Indiana State
Indiana State is 16-9 overall and sits at fourth place in the MVC with an 8-6 league record.The Sycamores are led by Anna Munn, who averages 15.2 points and whose 62 3-pointers and 200 attempts account for over two-thirds of ISU’s team totals in each category. Rachael Mahan (13.6) and Taylor Whitley (10.3) join Munn in double figures, and Mahan averages 8.1 rebounds.
As a team, Indiana State averages 59.2 points and allows 53.4 while shooting 38.9 percent overall, 30.4 percent on 3-pointers and 66.7 percent from the foul line.
Scouting Illinois State
Illinois State is 18-8 overall and third in the league at 10-4 in MVC games. The Redbirds have three players that score at least 13.2 points per game in preseason all-MVC guard Jamie Russell (14.1), Janae Smith (13.3 points, 8.5 rebounds) and Candace Sykes (13.2).
As a team, Illinois State scores 67.8 points and allows 61.4 while shooting 40.7 percent overall, 31.3 percent on 3-pointers and 75.8 percent from the free throw line.
