The Missouri State Lady Bears (12-12, 7-6 MVC) begin their final home weekend of the regular season Friday at 7:05 p.m. when Indiana State (13-10, 8-4) visits for a game between the third- and fourth-place teams in the league.
Friday is the annual Play4Kay game, as schools around the country raise awareness for breast cancer. Among the many activities include country music artist Candy Coburn singing the national anthem and performing at halftime. Breast cancer survivors in attendance are invited to the floor for the halftime show.
Additionally, Missouri State’s pink jerseys worn during the game, as well as pink jerseys designed for each coach, will be auctioned off to raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. The BCFO will also be in the JQH Arena concourse collecting donations and selling pink ribbons. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a pink carabiner keychain courtesy of Crighton Olive Dunn.
MSU closes the home schedule Feb. 23 against Illinois State at 2:07 p.m. The Lady Bear seniors will be honored on the court prior to the game and at a postgame reception at University Plaza.
Missouri State holds a 49-17 series lead over the Sycamores, including a 27-5 mark in Springfield. Indiana State has won the last three meetings after the Lady Bears won nine in a row from 2009-12.
Missouri State leads Illinois State 35-30 in the all-time series and has won five of the last seven meetings. The Lady Bears own a 20-11 series lead in Springfield.
Scouting Indiana State
Indiana State is 13-10 overall and 8-4 in league play as the MVC preseason favorite. The Sycamores are led by fifth-year senior transfer Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir with 13.8 points and 4.0 assists per game, while preseason all-MVC pick Anna Munn adds 12.7 points and Rachael Mahan grabs 6.8 rebounds per game.
As a team, Indiana State scores 63.8 points and allows 61.0 while shooting 38.5 percent overall, 31.1 percent on 3-pointers and 65.3 percent from the foul line. ISU also ranks second in the Valley with 9.7 steals per game.
Scouting Illinois State
Illinois State is 7-15 overall and 6-6 in MVC play. Chloe Nelson is the lone Redbird averaging double-figure points with 14.0 per game along with a team-high 58 assists, while Octavia Crump owns the rebounding lead at 6.6 per contest.
As a team, Illinois State scores 60.3 points per game and allows 65.5 while shooting 37.8 percent overall, 26.1 percent from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
First Meetings This Season
Indiana State defeated the Lady Bears 74-57 on Jan. 25 in Terre Haute. Missouri State committed 24 turnovers and shot 36.4 percent as the Sycamores used a 10-1 run early in the second half to distance themselves from MSU. Tyonna Snow led the Lady Bears in scoring with 15 points and Katie Palmer added 12.
Missouri State earned a 75-72 win over the Redbirds on Jan. 27 in Normal. After a 12-point second-half lead disappeared late, Katie Palmer scored the go-ahead basket with 58.7 seconds remaining and Tyonna added four points in the final minute to secure the win. Five Lady Bears scored at least nine points, while Chloe Nelson had 25 for the Redbirds.
