The Missouri State Lady Bears (12-11, 4-7 MVC) return to the Valley road this week after playing at home the last two weekends, beginning with a stiff test at second-place Creighton (16-6, 8-3) Thursday at 7:05 p.m. MSU then heads to Des Moines for a visit to Drake (7-15, 2-9) at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bears had mixed results with Creighton and Drake last month in Springfield, defeating the Bulldogs 80-77 in a thrilling last-minute victory Jan. 19, but losing 73-53 to the Bluejays two days later.
Missouri State is entering the home stretch of the season as the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament begins March 14 in St. Charles, Mo., just four weeks from Thursday’s game at Creighton. MSU has remaining home games against Southern Illinois (Feb. 21), Evansville (Feb. 23) and Wichita State (March 9), while visiting Indiana State (March 1) and Illinois State (March 3).
MSU leads Creighton 31-18 in the all-time series and is 9-12 against the Bluejays in Omaha. The Lady Bears are, however, the only MVC team to defeat CU twice in Sokol Arena since the building opened for the 2009-10 season.
MSU holds a 38-33 series lead over Drake and has won the last seven meetings. The Lady Bears have scored an average of 83.3 points per game in the last eight meetings.
First Meetings This Season
Creighton defeated the Lady Bears 73-53 on Jan. 21 in Springfield, going 13-for-32 from beyond the 3-point line. No MSU player scored in double figures in the contest.
Missouri State defeated Drake 80-77 Jan. 19 in Springfield, overcoming a six-point deficit with three minutes left for the win. Bry Snow scored a pair of go-ahead baskets in the final minute, and Whitney Edie scored 25 points and added 10 rebounds.
Creighton is 16-6 overall and 8-3 in MVC play and leads the nation with 9.5 3-point makes per game while ranking eighth nationally in that category in percentage.
Five different Bluejays score at least 7.9 points in a balanced offensive attack that scores 66.0 points per game and allows 59.3. Freshman Marissa Janning leads CU in scoring at 12.6 points while making 42.5 percent from long range. Creighton shoots 42.1 percent overall, 37.7 percent on 3-pointers and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe.
