Shorter Earns Third MVC Newcomer of the Week Honor

ST. LOUIS -- For the third time this season, Missouri State freshman Christiana Shorter has been named State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Shorter picked up the award for the period Jan. 25-31, after averaging 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocked shots and 1.5 steals to lift the Lady Bears to a pair of MVC road wins last week to close out the first half of the conference season.

Shorter capped a career game last Thursday at Southern Illinois by converting the game-winning basket with just six seconds left in MSU's 69-68 victory. The Tulsa native finished with a double-double, consisting of a career-best 21 points and 11 rebounds, to help the Lady Bears stop a two-game losing streak. Despite playing just 18 minutes of MSU's 86-57 rout of Evansville on Saturday, Shorter turned in another solid outing, finishing with 12 points, three boards and a pair of blocks. For the week, she would convert 11-of-15 free throw attempts while shooting .523 from the floor.

In her first 20 collegiate contests, Shorter has posted 11 double-figure scoring games, including a pair of double-doubles. Through the first half of the conference season, she is averaging 12.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, and ranks second in the Valley, trailing only fellow Lady Bear Casey Garrison, with her 2.7 steal per-game average in MVC play.

Shorter was previously honored as the MVC's top newcomer on Dec. 7 and Jan. 11. With her latest award, Shorter is one of four different Lady Bears who have earned a total of eight weekly Valley awards this season.

The Lady Bears (14-6, 6-3 MVC) return home to JQH Arena Friday (Feb. 5) evening to take on preseason Valley favorite Creighton in a 7:35 p.m., contest that will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Midwest as part of the MVC's television package.
