Work crews, fans with no power at home invited to watch basketball at Missouri State
The Missouri State Bears and Lady Bears are hoping to provide bright spots in a challenging week for many in and around ice-covered Springfield with the opportunity to watch MSU basketball free of charge Thursday and Friday nights.
Missouri State intercollegiate athletics is extending an invitation to local and visiting workers to get free tickets to the Missouri State men’s game Thursday (Jan. 18) and the MSU women’s game Friday (Jan. 19) in Hammons Student Center. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m. and the opponent for each is the University of Northern Iowa.
Emergency workers, utility and public works personnel and National Guard personnel involved in the cleanup and power restoration following weekend ice storms in the city may each claim a free ticket to Thursday’s game, Friday’s game, or both. Workers may come to the Hammons Student Center box office and show an ID to claim a free ticket.
Missouri State is also extending its invitation to the two games to residents in and around Springfield whose homes are without power or heat. Tickets will be available to fans on the honor system.
All free tickets provided will be reserved bleacher seats, one per person, and will be given out subject to availability.
The first 250 Missouri State students who pick up student tickets to either of the two games will receive a coupon for a free medium, one-topping pizza, courtesy of Domino’s Pizza.
"Our entire community and surrounding area are going through a challenge unlike anything most of us have ever seen," said Missouri State Director of Athletics Bill Rowe. "We salute the workers who are busy in the cleanup and restoration effort in bitterly cold conditions, and we hope many of them will have a chance to join us Thursday and Friday. We’re also hopeful that some of the people in Springfield whose homes are without power can also join us for our games."
The Hemingway’s Missouri State men’s basketball luncheon scheduled for Wednesday (Jan. 17) is canceled.
