KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced today that Missouri State's James Fawke was named to the NSCAA's NCAA Division 1 Men's Scholar All-North/Central Region First Team and Brandon Besong and Parker Maher were named to the Second Team.

Fawke, a defender from Cheltenham, England, had a tremendous junior campaign for the Bears. The Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year captained the nation's top defense en route to Missouri State's fifth conference regular season championship. Fawke led the Bears in minutes played, and earned recognition as a NSCAA All-Midwest Region, All-MVC and MVC Scholar-Athlete first team selections.

Besong is a staple on the back line and one of only two field players to record over 1700 minutes for the Bears. The junior out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa has proven that he can play any position on the field throughout the course of the game. This was not more true than on Sept. 13th against Belmont. With the final seconds of double overtime winding down, Besong leaped up and headed the ball into the back of the net just before the final seconds ran off the clock. His game-winner clinched a MSU Men's Soccer Tournament Co-Championship. Besong was recognized as an honorable mention All-MVC Selection this season.

Maher, another pivotal player on the Missouri State defense, started all 18 games for the Bears and was third on the team in minutes played. The native of Joplin, Mo. dropped into a more defensive role this season. His shutdown defending and steady footwork as an outside defender helped earn the Bears the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title. Maher was named to the 2013 MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention team.

Fawke, Besong, and Maher's defense helped the Bears lead the NCAA Division 1 in team goals against average (0.41) this season. Since 1995, Missouri State has had 17 first team, 14 second team, and 6 third team NSCAA All-Region Scholar Team selections. The 2013 NSCAA College Scholar All-Region Teams were named for four regions within the University category: East, North/Central, South, and West.
