ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Five Missouri State men’s soccer players earned Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete honors, the league announced Monday (Nov. 19). The Bears were represented on the 11-member first team by junior forward Cole Alexander and sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Riggs.

Recently named to the Capital One Academic All-District VI first team, Alexander was one of three unanimous first-team choices, along with SIUE’s Ryan Bauer and Drake’s Nick Marshall. The junior from Roseville, Calif., who holds a 3.75 GPA in advertising & promotion, played in 15 of the Bears’ 17 matches this season and led the team in goals (3), points (6), shots (33) and shots on goal (12). In 2011, he was an MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention pick and earned the 2012 MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award for his work in the classroom.

Also making the 11-man first team was Andrew Riggs, who started all 17 matches in goal for the Bears. It isn’t the first Valley honor this season for the St. Peters, Mo. native. On Oct. 10, he was named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week and prior to that was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12. The sophomore, who holds a 3.69 GPA in actuarial mathematics, registered six shutouts and a goals against average of 0.78. Riggs tied a school record for fewest goals allowed in a single season, giving up just 14 goals on the year.

Earning honorable mention status for the Bears were sophomore James Fawke, junior Jared Gain and sophomore Hayden Sander, who was one of two student-athletes that boasted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

The Valley’s scholar-athlete team is voted on by the league’s soccer sports information directors. The criteria for the all-MVC honor parallels the CoSIDA standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Also, student must have participated in at least 75 percent of the regular-seas matches or played in the league tournament. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
