Men's Soccer Ousted from MVC Tournament in Semifinals by SIUE, 2-1

The Missouri State men's soccer team (8-7-3, 4-1-2) was unable to dig out of an early hole and fell 2-1 to SIU Edwardsville (10-5-2, 4-1-2) in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals in Peoria, Ill. on Friday afternoon.

The Cougars' Jordan Barnes redirected a Benny Jeffery shot past Alex Riggs to put SIUE up 1-0 in the 19th minute of play.  SIUE added to the lead in the 31st minute when Jose Tamayo received a free kick and drilled a shot past Riggs.

Missouri State had a chance to get back in the match in the 36th minute.  Jordan Hoffman was taken down in the penalty box by SIUE keeper Nick Colico.  Gerard Barbero took the resulting penalty kick, but Colico saved the PK and the follow-up shot by Thomas Vania to keep the Bears off the board.

Senior Chad Johnson cut the Cougars' lead in half in the 78th minute.  Hoffman settled an SIUE clear and his attempted shot was blocked by the defense.  Johnson collected the loose ball and drilled a low shot past Colico.  The goal was Johnson's first of the year.

A furious offensive attack by the Bears late in the match was unable to register an equalizer.  MSU outshot the Cougars 10 to seven in the second half and 15 to 12 in the match.  Dan Williams and Jared Gain tallied three shots apiece to lead the Bears.

Senior Alex Riggs made six saves in the match.  Despite the two goals allowed, the Bears tied a school record with just 14 goals allowed on the season, a record first set in 1998.
