Melugin, Spangenberg Sweep MVC Weekly Honors

Nov. 7, 2011

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Missouri State men’s soccer players Heath Melugin and Trevor Spangenberg swept the Missouri Valley Conference weekly awards following Saturday’s 2-1 double-overtime win against Drake, the league office announced on Monday. Melugin delivered an assist and the game-winning goal for his first MVC Offensive Player of the Week award this season, while Spangenberg earned his second MVC Defensive Player of the Week honor with seven saves against the Bulldogs.

Senior Heath Melugin knocked in the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in second overtime period. His eighth-career game-winner moved him into the top-five all-time at Missouri State and helped the Bears clinch a share of the MVC regular-season title. The Springfield, Mo. native also contributed to Missouri State’s goal in the first half, feeding teammate Danny Frid for his first career goal. Melugin ranks among the MVC’s best in several statistical categories throughout league play as the preseason All-MVC selection is tied for the conference-lead in points (8), goals (3) and game-winning goals (2).

Spangenberg limited Drake’s high-octane offense to just one goal, which came off of a penalty kick in the second half. In addition to getting his fifth win in MVC action, Spangenberg shattered his career-high in saves with seven. The Valparaiso, Ind. native had previously recorded four saves in a game on three different occasions (Columbia, Cincinnati and Evansville).

Missouri State will enter the State Farm MVC Men’s Soccer Championship as the No. 1 seed and will play the winner of the Wednesday’s quarterfinal match between No. 4-seed Drake and No. 5-seed Central Arkansas. The game will be played at Morrison Stadium in Omaha, Neb., and is set for Friday, November 11 at 3 p.m. The Bears are looking to capture their second overall postseason title and fourth NCAA tournament bid.
