Missouri State sophomore goalkeeper Alex Riggs was named as the as the Brine/Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. Riggs is 2-0-1 in the last two weeks with three straight shutouts.
On Tuesday (Oct. 21) Riggs anchored a solid Missouri State defense that shut out second-ranked Creighton at home for the Bears’ second tie against a second ranked team this season. The Bears’ defense shut out the Bluejays 0-0 despite being outshot 21-6. Riggs was a mainstay in the goal for the Bears with a season-high 12 saves on the night while under almost continuous pressure from the Bluejays’ attackers.
Riggs continued his stellar play on Saturday (Oct. 25) with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Bradley Braves in Peoria, Ill. Riggs tallied four saves on the night to finish the week with 16 and 80 for the season.
Riggs’ season-high 12 saves, constant leadership and effort in goal was the key to a 1-0-1 record for the week and a third place ranking in the Valley standings. His efforts yielded success for the Bears and netted him the player of the week honor.
