Men's Soccer Extends Streak with Another Conference Win to End Road Trip
The Missouri State men's soccer team (4-5-1, 2-0-0) extended its regular season conference win streak to eight games with a 1-0 shutout win at Eastern Illinois (3-7-0, 0-2-0) on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears took the early lead when Heath Melugin headed a ball into the net in the first minute of play. He received a cross from Edin Sabic to net his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Missouri State senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs made seven saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year. He made five of the seven saves in the second half including three consecutive saves in the 83rd minute to hold the lead for the Bears.
Melugin, Paul Paradise and Dan Williams tallied three shots apiece to lead Missouri State. The Bears registered 11 total shots. It was Williams' first career start for Missouri State.
"Alex (Riggs) came up huge for us today," head coach Jon Leamy said after the match. "Overall, we played well today. Getting the early goal was big and we were able to hold the lead throughout the match."
The Bears will return home to begin a four-game home stand on Saturday, October 16, with a 7:00 p.m. match against Drake. Last season, the Bears beat the Bulldogs twice including a 3-2 overtime win at Plaster Field on November 1.
