Men's Soccer Defeats Central Arkansas in Double Overtime to Open Conference Play
It took the Missouri State men's soccer team (3-4-0, 1-0-0) until the final minute of the second overtime to get a conference-opening 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas (1-6-0, 0-1-0) in Conway, Ark., Saturday afternoon.
Missouri State and Central Arkansas battled for 109-plus minutes before MSU found the back of the net to gain the victory. Junior Gerard Barbero drilled a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box in the 110th minute to give Missouri State the win.
The two teams matched up evenly through the match with each side registering seven shots apiece and each gaining six corners. Paul Paradise led MSU with three shots.
Senior goalkeeper Alex Riggs needed to make just one save to earn the victory and shutout over UCA. The win is Riggs' third of the season and 22nd of his career moving him into a tie with Nathan Platz for fourth all-time on the Missouri State career leaders list.
"Gerard (Barbero) hit a nice ball with some bend in the final minute to beat their keeper," head coach Jon Leamy said about the game-winning goal. "Alex (Riggs) did a good job of controlling the back and he was sharp today. It is nice to be able to get a victory to begin conference play."
Missouri State will continue its road trip with a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament match at Saint Louis on Tuesday night. Kickoff at Hermann Stadium against the Billikens is at 7:00 p.m. The first 50 Bears fans who attend a pregame function at the Buffalo Brewing Company in St. Louis will receive free admission to the match. Additional Missouri State fans can obtain a voucher for $4 tickets by contacting the MSU soccer offices at (417) 836-5243.
