Men's Soccer picks up 2-1 win over UMKC
The Missouri State men's soccer team notched its first victory of the 2006 campaign with a 2-1 win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Sunday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo. Freshman Will Ziegahn scored his first collegiate goal and junior Yanik Joseph recorded the game winner for the Bears, who improved to 1-0-1 on the season. UMKC fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Ziegahn found the top right corner of the goal when a through ball was deflected off a UMKC defender. The goal came with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, and gave the Bears a 1-0 halftime lead. Joseph made it 2-0 in the 58th minute, capitalizing on a one-on-one opportunity by finding the right side of the goal from the top of the box.
UMKC's Joe Chirco scored with six seconds remaining in the match to deny the Bears a shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Riggs picked up his first collegiate victory in goal for the Bears. Riggs took over in the 31st minute of the first half when MSU starter Lance Parker was given a red card for a hand-ball outside the box, which denied a UMKC goal. Despite playing down a player, the Bears were able to score both goals and nearly record a shutout.
UMKC outshot Missouri State 19-7, but six of the seven MSU shots were on goal compared to only five for the Kangaroos. Both teams recorded four saves, with Riggs picking up three and Parker one. Ricardo Guerra took the loss in goal for UMKC, allowing both goals to go with four saves.
MSU junior Ryan Anderson recorded two shots on goal, junior Omar Shoucair fired one shot on goal, and Joseph added another shot on goal to go with his first goal of the season.
Missouri State will head to Omaha, Neb., next weekend for the Ameritas Classic hosted by Creighton. The Bears will take on Fairleigh Dickinson University in a 2:30 p.m. match on Friday, Sept.1, and will challenge Georgetown University in a 10:30 a.m. contest on Sunday, Sept. 3.
