SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Missouri State men's soccer team officially announced its 2013 schedule Tuesday (May 28). The 16-game regular-season slate is highlighted by six Missouri Valley Conference matches, a home tournament and several home contests at Plaster Field.
Head coach Jon Leamy's team is coming off a 5-8-4 season in 2012, despite tying a program record for fewest goals allowed in a single season with 14.
Unlike last season, Bear fans will have a chance to see MSU men's soccer in action on 11 different occasions, compared to last year's five home matches.
"I think one of the great things is we're going to be playing at home," said Leamy. "We have a good, balanced schedule for home games, which is a pretty nice switch for what happened last year. We were on the road quite a bit, and now it's coming back to us."
The Bears open the 2013 schedule with a pair of home matches against two first-time opponents and programs new to the Division I ranks. Missouri State will host Incarnate Word to kick off the regular season on Friday, Aug. 30, followed by a Sunday evening (Sept. 1) contest with Nebraska Omaha.
MSU's first match on the road will take place in "Music City" - Nashville, Tenn. - as the Bears begin a home-and-away series with Belmont on Sept. 7. The two teams are set to meet a month later at Plaster Field (Oct. 8).
A tough three-game homestand ensues as the Bears host the MSU Men's Soccer Tournament, Sept. 13-15. The Bears welcome Detroit and Western Illinois for Friday/Sunday matchups and finish up the three-game home stretch with a battle-tested Xavier squad on Sept. 21. The Muskateers, who recorded a first-round win in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and lost to eventual champion Indiana, shut out Missouri State, 1-0, in Cincinnati last year.
Oral Roberts is the second of two home-and-away matchups for Missouri State. The Bears travel to Tulsa on Sept. 24 and host the Golden Eagles on Oct. 15.
Before the official start to Valley play, the Bears are set to host Lipscomb, a team they defeated 1-0 at the Central Arkansas Tournament last season.
The MVC schedule gets under way on Saturday, October 5 when MSU meets new league addition Loyola University Chicago at Plaster Field. The Bears three away matches in conference consist of Drake (Oct. 12), Evansville (Oct. 19) and Bradley (Nov. 2), all of which are pegged for Saturday evening start times.
Missouri State concludes its 11-game home schedule with Central Arkansas on Wednesday, Oct. 23 and SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Bears look to avenge last year's 2-1 loss to SIUE, one of just two teams to register a multi-goal performance against the rock-solid MSU defense.
The 2013 MVC Men's Soccer Championship will be played on the campus of Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., Wednesday, Nov. 13 through Sunday, Nov. 17.
