Roberts Leads Bears With Two Goals Against Drake
Oct. 12, 2013
Des Moines, IA - The Missouri State men's soccer team (7-3-1, 2-0 MVC) defeated Drake (5-5-2, 1-1 MVC) 2-0 on Saturday night.
The Bears couldn't have asked for a better start to the second conference game of the 2013 season.
Only seven minutes in, Jack Roberts opened the scoring. From the top of the box, Jack Wood passed the ball to Roberts on the right of the goal. Roberts spun past the defender and found the far side of the net for the goal.
Jack Roberts' day was not over. In the 27th minute, Andrew Turner received a ball on the back line and sent an over-the-top pass to the running Roberts which connected right past the keeper. Roberts took a dribble and buried the shot far post. With his second goal, Roberts claimed sole possession at the top of the Missouri State goals list with his fourth of the season.
"It's comforting knowing our back has been playing so strong," said Roberts, who scored two goals for the first time in his Missouri State career. "I feel like if we didn't get that second one, it would have been really tough down the stretch. This is the type of team that hangs around."
The second half included a lot of back and forth play between the two teams, with several challenges for loose balls in the middle of the field.
Goalkeeper Trevor Spangenberg logged his sixth shutout of the season and second in MVC play. The conference leader in goals against average came up with a huge save on a header attempt in the box late in the first half. Drake's Ben LeMay directed the ball to the far post and Spangenberg just put a finger on it to make the save and preserve the clean sheet.
